SIN

Nervous butterflies fill my belly, making me feel nauseous. I stare down into the nearly full cup of coffee, thinking about last night and how exhilarating and free I felt. How only Christian can make me feel. I recall my feelings when he told me to break up with Taj. At first, I was shocked, but the longer I thought about it, the more it made sense. After last night, there was no way we could go back to what we used to be. It’s not fair to Taj or me. I don’t want to be that girl who cheats, and what I did last night with Christian was wrong while still being with Taj. Even so, I’d do it again and again, which is precisely why I must end this between us.

With how strange Taj has been acting lately, I figured ending things in a public place was the best thing to do. The door to the coffee shop opens, carrying a gust of wind with it, and I look up from my coffee to find Taj standing there, his gaze darting around the room.

My throat tightens, and my heart thunders in my chest. I have to remember this is for the best, not only for me, but for him as well. As soon as he spots me, he rushes over, his eyes almost wild. His bag is half slung over his shoulder, and his hair is disheveled.

His eyes that once made me feel so happy and loved but now only leave me cold and detached collide with mine.

“What’s going on with you, Siân?” he asks, letting out a harsh breath.

Is there a certain way to break up with someone? An easy way to let them go? I don’t think so. Heartache hurts, and no matter what I do, this is going to end badly.

“I think you should sit down.” I gesture to the chair in front of me.

I don’t want this to turn into a big scene, but I can already feel the eyes of the few coffee shop patrons watching us.

Taj’s lips turn down into an ugly frown. “What’s going on, baby? I tried to call you last night and didn’t hear a word from you. Kyla said you didn’t get home until late.”

It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes. Instead, I decide to jump headfirst into the thick of it. “There’s no point in me dragging this out, so I’m just going to come out and say it.” I pause, letting out a rush of air from my lungs. “It’s over.”

Silence. Complete silence blankets the space, and I wait with bated breath for the other shoe to drop, for him to say something.

“W-What do you mean it’s over?”

“I mean… I’m done. I’m breaking up with you. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m tired of pretending we’re this perfect couple when we’ve been falling apart for a long time.”

Shock fills his face, and his gaze widens. “Please, Siân, don’t do this. I know you don’t mean it.
